Choosing the right automatic stretch wrapper for the right setup can be tricky unless you consider the load to be wrapped. While there are many different models and factors to choose from, there are two basic styles to consider: turntable stretch wrappers and straddle stretch wrappers. The determining factor is the construction and composition of the pallet load.
On a turntable stretch wrapper, the load rotates on a turntable while the film transport system moves up and down to distribute the stretch film. The turntable typically rotates at 12 to 15 revolutions per minute, so the pallet load must be stable and robust, and the weight of the load must be evenly distributed.
With a straddle stretch wrapper, the load remains stationary while the film transport system rotates around the pallet, moving up and down to dispense the film. This is useful for light and unstable loads that can fall apart as the pallet rotates. It's also better for very heavy loads weighing more than 5,000 pounds. Some carousels can handle weights up to 5,000 lbs. on a single pallet, but once this range is exceeded, it is highly recommended that you use a straddle stretch wrapper.
The SMARTWASP pallet wrapper has high efficiency with a slewing bearing drive. It can handle 35-40 loads per hour with no noise, long service life, and no additional counterweights.
Another consideration is the footprint. Turntable wrappers are portable because you can always move it around if needed. They are perfect for fitting between dock doors, which is a popular location for semi-automatic stretch wrappers. Straddle wrappers are more permanent because you need to secure them to the floor.
Straddle stretch wrappers also take up more floor space because of the rotation of the winding arm and support frame. You need wider floor space to free up space around the arms. The turntable can be placed in a smaller area for forklift handling of pallet loads.
When ceiling height becomes an issue, a turntable stretch wrapper may be a better solution. Turntable stretch wrappers are typically shorter than straddle wrappers with the same pack height capacity.
Budget is the final consideration. Turntable stretch wrappers typically range in price from $5,000 to $15,000, while straddle wrappers are more expensive, starting at $17,500 and up.
SMARTWASP pallet wrappers save you money with up to 400% pre-stretch, we use standard constant release film, and spot wrap to dose the film.
